Tea Time Talk: Determining the Root - Chinese Calendar Constitutional Diagnosis and Treatment, with Howard Chen M.D.

…”In my life cycle of establishing stability and structure, preferring growth, and then returning to establishing a new structure and stability, the practice that has been the most enduringly useful to me has been the study of the Chinese calendar in the context of the BaZi (生辰八字). After more than a decade of study and application of its principles with every one of my Biomedicine and Chinese Medicine patients, I can say for certain that it deciphers an individual’s constitution, the proverbial běn (本 of 标 and 本), which I believe is the xìng (性) that many authors, such as Wang FengYi (王凤仪) refer to.”

Tea Time Talk: Whys and Hows of Holes and Points continued

This is the monthly live event, on the second Friday or Saturday of each month, as part of my Imperial Tutor mentorship. I either present a more formal lecture myself, followed by a lively discussion (what used to be called “History Train Lectures”), or I invite an important voice or two in Chinese medicine (practitioner of the East Asian healing arts, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, translator, author etc.) for a casual chat. While this is a members-only event, the general public can always join for a 9-day $9 trial to check it out.

In this month’s event, I will continue my exploration with Sean Bradley and Daniel Altschuler on "The Whys and Hows of Holes and Points" from November. Once again, we shall meet in person in Sean’s inspiring library and sip fancy tea while we invite all of you to join us on Zoom.

Tea Time Talk: Pregnancy Care in the Classics

This is the monthly live event, on the second Friday or Saturday of each month, as part of my Imperial Tutor mentorship. I either present a more formal lecture myself, followed by a lively discussion (what used to be called “History Train Lectures”), or I invite an important voice or two in Chinese medicine (practitioner of the East Asian healing arts, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, translator, author etc.) for a casual chat. While this is a members-only event, the general public can always join for a 9-day $9 trial to check it out.

Pregnancy care in the classics is this month's theme, for three reasons:

  • We just started the new gynecology-focused season 2 of the podcast on "Over the Moon?"

  • Andrew Loosely and I are about to teach our yearly pregnancy course, "Nurturing the Fetus: The Ten Months of Pregnancy," based on three historical pregnancy texts that I translated. And...

  • I am presenting a paper on this topic at a panel on "Conceptualizing Conception" at the Association of Asian Studies conference in Seattle on March 16.

For this Tea Time Talk, we will also be joined by Kristed Phipps who took our course last year and has continued studying pregnancy support privately with Andrew.

Join us as we discuss how to translate this ancient knowledge and apply it practically and safely in the modern clinic and how constant study of these amazing texts continues to expand our ability to support pregnant patients as effectively as possible.

Tea Time Talk: More Comparing Ancient Medicines

This is the monthly live event, on the second Friday or Saturday of each month, as part of my Imperial Tutor mentorship. I either present a more formal lecture myself, followed by a lively discussion (what used to be called “History Train Lectures”), or I invite an important voice or two in Chinese medicine (practitioner of the East Asian healing arts, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, translator, author etc.) for a casual chat. While this is a members-only event, the general public can always join for a 9-day $9 trial to check it out.

This month will will be treated to a follow-up with Dr. Arthur Harris, the medical historian specializing in comparing early Greek and Chinese medicine. Potential topics that came up in our conversation from early December where:

  • What do practitioners get out of reading ancient texts?

  • The special characteristics of gynecology as embodied knowledge and special expertise about the female body. What could a possible divergence between oral and written transmission look like?

  • Pneuma versus Qi and the materiality of the body

  • Comparing and contrasting the Four Humors, Four Seasons, and Five Phases/Dynamic Agents….

Diamond Core: Orientation

This is the first of our regular Thursday morning discussion meetings for the Diamond Core course, Level Two of my Triple Crown Intensive Training Program for Classical Chinese. Unless the student has exceptional background in CLASSICAL (not just modern) Chinese already and is familiar with basic grammar rules, sinological research skills, classical philosophy, and grammar terminology, taking the Foundations course is a prerequisite for being admitted to this course.

Tea Time Talk: “Driven by Life” With Matheus Almeida

For this month, I am meeting with Matheus Almeida, a practitioner in Brazil who truly walks his talk. In our conversation, he is hoping to explore a different approach to Chinese medicine, namely “as a game change of moving from a disease-driven perspective to a life-driven perspective. That is exactly how I work in my office, the way I teach in Brazil and how I lead my life based on CM knowledge. Also, that was the reason I got invited to be a member of the Prenatal Alliance NGO.”

Tea Time Talk: Cold in Chinese Medicine, with Leo Lok

For this month’s Tea Time Talk, I have invited my dear friend and podcast partner, Leo Lok, to join me for an exploration of cold, from the perspective of Chinese medicine, both in terms of etiology and as therapy. To those of you who know me, it will be obvious why I have a fascination with this topic. I am, after all, a passionate open-water swimmer and live pretty far up north in a cold rainy dark climate. Am I making myself healthy or sick with this practice? Am I strengthening my weiqi (protective qi) or am I taxing my poor kidneys? I know I make myself happy every time I take a dip without a wetsuit, that is for sure. Are we to follow the advice in the Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage)? And what does that mean? As you can see, I have way more questions than answers, so I sure hope Leo will help us shed some light on this, based on his unparalleled combination of clinical insights, scholarship, and cultural experience!!!!
